About the Workshop: Spring Wildflowers of the Southern Appalachians

Join naturalist Luke Cannon for a full-day adventure into the heart of the Southern Appalachian wilderness, where wildflowers are more than just beautiful—they are storytellers, healers, and companions in the landscape.

As we hike through lush forests and meadows, you’ll learn to identify native plants, explore their medicinal and edible uses, and discover their roles in crafts, survival skills, and the delicate web of nature. But beyond their practical gifts, these plants have their own stories to share—offering us a deeper connection to the land and a greater sense of belonging.

Through engaging stories, hands-on exploration, and shared discovery, this workshop will transform the way you see and interact with the natural world. Come meet the wildflowers—and leave with new friends among the flora!

What You’ll Gain from This Experience:

  • A deeper appreciation for the simple beauty of the natural world
  • Confidence in identifying native wildflowers and their unique characteristics
  • Knowledge of edible and medicinal uses of local plants
  • Insights into traditional craft and survival applications
  • A deeper understanding of the ecological roles and relationships of these plants
  • A renewed sense of connection and belonging in the natural world
  • Unforgettable stories and moments of awe in the company of fellow nature lovers

This class will be held outdoors, rain or shine, on Saturday, April 12th, 2025, from 9:30am – 3:30pm near Asheville, NC.

This class is suitable both for intermediate plant people and beginners alike! The minimum age is 15. The ability to hike on a mountain trail for at least 2 miles is suggested.

Lily Harlin

Bookkeeper

Lily is an artist, creator, and dreamer. Since a very young age, she has been immersed in the natural world and draws heavy inspiration from the wild. Though her medium changes frequently, Lily’s art and expression always incorporate an element of the organic and unpredictable. She got her associate in fine arts in 2023, and now volunteers at her school as a ceramic studio monitor. She hopes to open a studio of her own one day to have a place to teach and inspire others. In addition to doing commission work, Lily has been creating many graphics for The Firefly Gathering since 2019. Lily grew up in the Earthskills community from the time she was eight years old, so having the opportunity to grow and give back in so many ways has been incredibly fulfilling. No matter where she ends up, this group of people and ideas will always hold a special place in her heart.
